Van Zyl, Frieda
Frieda van Zyl was born in 1966, in Kimberley. After she matriculated she studied Graphic Art under Niky Daly and Hardy Botha at the University of Stellenbosch.
In 1986 she went on to study Fine Arts with Graphic Art as a major at Cape Technicon under Jan Vermeiren. She achieved distinction in photography. In 1987 Frieda was chosen as one of three South African artists to exhibit in the Republic of China, at the Taiwanese Biannual.
Frieda started painting in 1997. It was a twist of fate due to a serious back injury, she was not allowed to sit – only to stand or lie down. This was frustrating, but she realised it was the ideal opportunity to pursue her painting dreams.
Within her first week, she sold her first 3 paintings. Today Frieda’s work is exhibited in a variety of Galleries countrywide. She even contributed artworks of the set of the television programme, Isidingo.
Frieda devides her time between painting and etching, although etching – a technique that is hundreds of years old - is her first love.
Her work captures moments of whimsical happiness, showing people who are doing something that gives them freedom.
