Johan has been a professional artist since 1975. He trained at the Cape Technikon from 1966 to 1969. In 1977, he held his first solo exhibition. Since then, he exihibited regularly through various solo and group exihibitions, including the Cape Town Triennale of 1991.

He has a passion for the wildly diverse rural South African landscape, especially that found in the Western Cape, the Karoo and Namaqualand.

His works can be seen in various private collections and galleries.
